A brasserie for everyone in the historic Sociëteitsgebouw
Grand Bar Marie is located at Mariaplaats, in a place with centuries of history. Today, you can drop by for lunch, drinks, a good glass of wine or dinner.

A panorama of Utrecht on the wall
Inside, you’ll find a mural by Jeroen Hermkens. He was inspired by the history of the location and by Pieter Saenredam, who painted the Dom Tower from Mariaplaats in 1663.
The Mariaplaats mural is Hermkens’ largest work and is considered the largest artwork in a hospitality venue in the Netherlands.
Where does our name come from?
The history of this place dates back to the Middle Ages. This was once the site of the immunity of St. Marie, surrounding the former St. Mary’s Church. Marie owes her name to this historic place.

For members for 150 years
Sociëteit De Vereeniging purchased the building in 1872. From that moment on, the building was home to the society for more than 150 years. De Vereeniging still exists today. The part of the building where Marie is located is now separate from the society and open to everyone.
